Director's Quote of the Day:"Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but we rather have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit. " Aristotle

Part 1

 by Nina Perlove

Can you tell what metals these flutes are made out of? This is a video response to "James Galway: 16 flute demonstration" but with this difference: these flutes are all by the same flutemaker (www.burkart.com) and with the same cut of headjoint (M2 style) but in different materials.

Can you hear the differences? Do you have a favorite? Let me know. In a few weeks I will post the results. Below are the flutes used in the demonstration but NOT in the order played on the video:

  • 14K Gold with soldered tone holes

  • 14K Gold with drawn tone holes

  • 10K gold

  • 19.5K gold

  • silver .016 wall with platinum riser

  • silver .016 wall with 14K gold headjoint

  • silver .016 wall with platinum headjoint

  • 5-95 (silver-platinum)

  • 5-95 flute with 998 silver head and platinum riser

  • 998 silver
